i shoot most of the work in my portfolio with my nikon d700 dslr but there are some images that have been shot with my studio partner’s pentax 67. i also shoot with my mamiya rz67, pentax k1000, diana mini, holga, holga 135bc and my iphone 4 (yes, it counts ;)). as far as editing (i’m guessing you mean retouching and not the process of selecting your photos) goes…i use a combination of lightroom and photoshop for all of my images, some I just color correct/add color adjustments and others I bring into photoshop to retouch. suggestions? do whatever you think looks cool/pretty! that must seem like a vague answer but they’re your images so you can create whatever feeling you want with them with editing. if you have specific photoshop questions feel free to email me :) carmen@carmen-chan.com

The Blow “True Affection” from Paper Television

outtakes from my shoot with john wes @ my studio/downtown la, september 2010.
super personal style + good looks = fashion photogs dream.
see the rest of the story on my website.
john and i worked together 2 years ago and i’ve always given him props for his style (even when we had to wake up for 5am calls and he would roll out of bed 10 mins before being at the office). we finally got a chance to shoot together just for the heck of it…he brought a couple looks from his closet and we just walked around the neighborhood and shot a bit with window light in studio….had a lot of fun. he’s such a natural! he’s currently pursuing acting and is working on some really cool projects. if you’re free this weekend, check out the play that he is performing in at a theatre in sherman oaks.

aimee and ryan’s love in photos, irvine, september 2010.
production & set design by my lovely bff’s jennifer yamauchi and melanie chiu
they look like models but they’re not :) aimee and ryan are dear friends to me and the victim’s of my first engagement session. we went to school together at ucsd and they’re getting married next year in hawaii. since their wedding photographer is out there, they weren’t going to have engagement photos so I wanted to take some for them. mel (future-interior-designer) and jenn (wedding/event planner extraoirdinnaire) are really talented and came up with cute ideas and props/set pieces for the shoot. i love what aimee and ryan picked out to wear too (the bow tie kills me) :D the shoot was tons of fun and gave me tingly butterflies. mel and i almost cried while we were shooting because ry and aimee are so damn beautiful together (our tear ducts are also cosmically intertwined). <3
super awesome blog that diana discovered and shared with me. awesome because it’s organized and doesn’t require me to click “read more” to see entire editorials and it’s really well organized by photographer, publication, and model. the images are pretty high res and it even has cool things like a worldwide vogue cover archive. comprehensive and inspiring! LIKE.

kendra (ford) @ my studio, september 2010.
hair & makeup by joanna berdzinska
i assisted my studio partner, diana, with a funtastic (yes!) shoot at the l.a. county fair last weekend and kendra was her model for the night. i couldn’t resist from shooting her so i asked her if she didn’t mind, after getting back to the studio and taking off her nail polish and changing back into her clothes, I’d shoot her against the wall of our studio for a couple minutes.
i shot a total of sixteen frames and ended up with the above… she’s that good. :) her mom was really sweet and hung out with us all night, what a trooper. i’m certain you’ll be seeing more of kendra soon. she went on her first runway casting for guess by marciano without any prior training and booked it.
in case you were wondering, i ate shared a turkey leg and roasted corn. what else do you go to the fair for?
