New Year, New Things.

I can’t believe January has flown by so quickly. I think this past year more than any, I wish I had more hours in a day! Fortunately I finally have some time to provide an update.

I’m not sure how to summarize 2012 but I will admit that a lot of amazing and unexpected things happened work-wise and I’m thankful to still be working in Hong Kong, while being able to spend time with family and be a part of an amazing community here. I really miss and appreciate the support of everyone that I was able to see in LA, Costa Rica, Vegas, and NY at the end of the year, and I can’t wait to see them again in May. I’ll share some travel photos in future posts, but without further ado, here’s what’s new!

How I Met Your Style

Ken and Eric helped give HIMYS a facelift! We will still have 120 film features but we’ll also be sharing blog posts in between features. We also have a really exciting collaboration coming up with a major Hong Kong publication and are very excited to share it in a couple months! DKNY Fragrances

Natalie is one of the first models I photographed in LA and we’ve worked together so many times since then. She has done so well at such a young age (check out the newest pair of badass boots that her and her sister designed!) and always has great energy. It was so much fun to photograph her in the streets of New York for the DKNY Core Girl campaign. It was my first time shooting in the snow! Thankfully it wasn’t as cold as it was last year so I could still feel my fingers. Thank you x a million, Jeanette! <3

Lane Crawford

It was so exciting to be able to shoot for Lane Crawford for a Sacai brand feature that was featured on the front page of their website. I photographed the lovely Yu Xuan from Model Genesis who didn’t speak much Cantonese, so I was able to practice my stellar Mandarin ;) Massive thanks to the amazing team - Jason, Sha, Jessica, Andey, Vincent, Ken Hui (hair), Gabbie Lee (makeup), & Aimee - for making this happen so beautifully!

Loewe

Tina was invited by Loewe to be one of the 7 international bloggers to showcase the new ‘Leo’ bag. I had the opportunity to run around Happy Valley with Tina for an afternoon capturing her in a couple stunning looks she put together. The images were debuted on the front page of the Loewe website! A big thank you to Adrian and Tina for inviting me to be a part of such a fun project.

Diane Von Furstenberg for Prestige Magazine

With most Prestige shoots, the brief is to shoot a strong portrait and you often have no idea what the environment will be like when you arrive, so you work with what you’re given. That’s not really the part that made me nervous, it was more because I was photographing THE DVF! We met her in the Presidential Suite at the Four Seasons which was grand in itself but there she was, unassumingly perched at the desk in front of her Macbook saying, “Yes! Come in!”. She hopped around without heels, asking whether we would be photographing her full length and if so, she’d have to change because the length of the dress wouldn’t allow her to wear heels. She came out of the dressing room in her evening attire and wouldn’t stop gushing about how beautiful everyone was. She was such a delight and very easy to photograph. Confident and strong, but very kind-hearted and humble as well. Thank you William, Vivienne, and Aimee!

Olivier Rousteing for Prestige Magazine

I’m incredibly blessed in that I’ve had the opportunity to meet and photograph some of the most amazing and down-to-earth people (there is hope in humanity!). Olivier was no exception. He is the insanely talented, impossibly handsome, creative director/designer for the house of Balmain. Did I mention we’re the same age? Thanks to William, Vincenzo, and Aimee for making this happen!

Prodip & Munka for Lane Crawford/TOMS

Environmental portraits/reportage is something that I always really enjoy and even more so if it’s related to style/art/creative. Even in LA with my friends Ed, Jeff & Zee, I could spend hours hanging out in their music studio, and it’s also what HIMYS is all about. I’m always blown away by people’s talent - their ability create art from thin air and their uniqueness. The commission by Pedder Group, to shoot some behind-the-scenes of the artists invited to customize a pair of TOMS for charity, was right up my alley. The Armoury for Materialist Magazine

Mark Cho & The Armoury were featured in the inaugural issue of Materialist Magazine, where Mark shares about his most prized possessions. I spent some time taking portraits of him, Alan and Ethan at their Pedder Building and Landmark stores. Thanks to Mark, Jocelyn and Agata for the opportunity!

James Jean for Lane Crawford BLITZ

This project was my first video commission. American artist James Jean was in Hong Kong painting a mural on the glass house inside of Lane Crawford Canton Rd. It was a privilege to watch and film him for 3 days. He told me that he didn’t draft anything beforehand, he painted the entire thing freehand. So insane! The entire time we were trying to figure out a way we could immortalize the mural - it’s washed off once they bring in another collaboration/project. Wishing I could have had a piece of that glass in my home! Watch the video and hear the story behind Velum and the line of OVM accessories. Thanks so much to Pedder Group, Kim, The Agency HK, and Def Perception for the perfect eerie yet bangin’ track!

Whew! Writing that was such a good reminder of some of the blessings that I’ve received in 2012 and all the clients, crew, and people I’ve photographed and built friendships with, so many that I haven’t even mentioned. I’m thankful for each of these people that God has placed in my life, and for you as well! Thank you for taking the time to read and support my work. I hope you had an amazing start to 2013 and I’m excited to continue sharing this crazy journey with you!

Before I get to sharing the work that I’m thankful for, I want to share a group of people that I’m thankful for!

Brew&Post

I’ve been super blessed since moving back to Hong Kong to have been able to reconnect with people and make a ton of new friends through work and church. There is a particular group of beautiful people that I’ve met through blogging that have really helped me feel at home in HK. Bonus points for our friendships because we all have the similar desire to blog about the things we’re passionate about - share the people, places, fashion, style etc. that we want to support because we think they are doing something cool and different. Recently we decided that, with all our blogging powers combined (like Captain Planet), we would create Brew&Post.

B&P is a digital content company that consists of international bloggers (below, from L-R) Derek & Melinda of Ztylistas, Christing of Fashion Hedonism, JJ of The Wanderlister, myself & Ken (not pictured) of How I Met Your Style, Denise of SUPERWOWOMG, and Jason of TOUGHLOVE. Ken and I started HIMYS because we really wanted to see what inspiration we could find among people who have eclectic style and character. Each blog that is a part of B&P has a really strong voice and really good (FUN!) posts. I personally love reading their blogs to see what they think about what’s going on in HK.

Instagram Monday / T8 edition

I’ve been stuck at my computer all day after a shoot scheduled for today was post-poned due to the incoming typhoon. Oh, Hong Kong Weather, why can’t you be a little nicer sometimes? Okay, I’m happy for all my friends who were able to leave their offices early and retreat home without being swept away.

So post-Philippines I babysat Kuma, her dad’s photos were just featured on booooooom.com! Pretty awesome.

I also shot the FW’12 Lookbook for Mata-hari (I wish I could have their entire collection), something for Kinfolk at HK Farm, and met the team at Converse. P.S. HK stocks the best limited edition converse!
The week was also filled with FW’12 press previews with my BPB (brew&post buddy) Denise (SUPERWOWOMG) for Monki, Givenchy, Joyce (where we had a illustrations drawn of us by Mickco! so cute) and 3.1 Phillip Lim to be posted on the How I Met Your Style blog.

Not only do we oogle and pretty fashiony things but we also stuff our faces with the best food and drinks around HK including Tung Po Kitchen (it was so good I forgot to rotate my photo, I highly recommend the fried chicken and the razor clams, but eeeeverything is good), Him Kee Hotpot, Haven (drinks & shisha, really chill!), and Chaiwanese.

Over the weekend I stopped by Mel & Eunice’s EP release show which was so so good. SO good… that I was supposed to take photos for them but I was so mesmerized by the music that I totally failed at my task. Check out Sun and Shield.

Leading up to today’s T8, HK was raining on and off all last week (the last couple months?!). Here’s something shot with my X100 during the rain/dogsitting session that I hope I’ll be able to see again in the morning.

The Philippines: church, prison, and fried chicken

I missed Instagram Monday while mulling over what to write for this post. So here’s an Instagram AND X100 Wednesday! :D I recently bought the Fujifilm X100 so now I have a super convenient camera in addition to my iPhone which means, more photos, more often! It doesn’t take much to make me happy, really.

I left off last time just before my trip to the Philippines. Mabuhay!

We had to stop for Popeye’s fried chicken at the Hong Kong departures terminal; it’s the only place they have Popeye’s in HK! We also ate Jollibee’s (world famous!) fried chicken while in the Philippines. Besides the fried chicken, food options in the Philippines include LOTS of fried pork/pork skin/pork skewer/pork fat and lots of rice. Not good for teacup pig lovers (hi, Denise!).

Here’s a photo diary of my trip. The video below the photos is a summary of the trip that I made for my church. I’m not in the video much since I was holding the camera most of the time, but that was fine by me! ;)

We had a brief layover at the Manila Airport Hotel.

I woke up to this sunrise (and woke up Alison in the process of discovering it). “OOHH MY GOOOSH THE SUNRISE!” *leaping over my bed to grab my camera*
Public transportation: Jeepney’s! No capacity limit.

It was a 45 minute jeepney ride from the ferry pier to the village. The red jeepney in the distance is carrying lots of youth and kids that were also heading to church.
Andrew ended up giving his spare set of guitar strings to this 94 year old man who probably had never restrung his guitar; it was all kinds of out-of-tune.
The space where we met for service is just through that leaf curtain.
Window seat, pleeeeease!

My first mission trip is to the Philippines. I did not know what to expect, and it would only be a few days. We visited poor cities and remote villages, which meant leaving our valuables behind (the reason why I wore my plastic Badtz Maru watch—from a Happy Meal on a Vegas Trip).

We visited the Ati tribe in Guimarras and it was surprising how content people were despite their circumstances, they had so much joy though they did not have much.

We also visited a women’s prison in Iloilo. I have never visited a prison before, I thought we would be sitting on opposite sides of a plexiglass window talking to women handcuffed and escorted to an intercom phone. However, we were able to join the inmates in a small room with rows of plastic chairs, sitting casually among them after having introduced ourselves. I learned from our host that most of the women are there for reasons related to drugs. Low level crimes which might have been the reason why it was a pretty low security facility. I felt as if I was walking through the back gate of someone’s yard (you can see us coming out of it in the video). We weren’t allowed cell phones or cameras in the room so we left them in a wooden box by the door and signed our names into a book without even checking our IDs (even though we were asked to bring our passports). I expected a dark cloud over the place, inmates that would be melancholy over their situation. However, it was quite the contrary, the women led worship and shared the faithfulness of God in their lives. They have faith that God has a purpose and plan for their lives, that their value and identity is in the way God sees them in Christ and not in the mistakes they have made in the past.

The missions trip lasted 4 days. A quick jeepney ride, a ferry boat, and a plane flight later, I was back to HK—the reality of having to think about my source of joy, my purpose, and how my past achievements (and mistakes) define who I am.

This experience allowed me to get a glimpse of what life could look like if I shifted all my attention towards others and their potential for growth and change; to invest time in projects that produce less temporal results. I’ve been thinking a lot about how to do this in HK (ie. been really out of it), how to create more change with the work I’m doing or whether I can be working on more? I appreciate that you’re joining me on this journey and I’ll keep you posted on my ideas :)

I mentioned a while back that I was commissioned by Prestige to photograph a portrait of Alexander Wang. The photos have been published in the July issue with Ethan Hawke on the cover. (side note: Gattaca is one of my favorite movies) @#!&@(#!!! Not only did they publish my favorite shot, but they also included my second set up in the contents page. Thank you Vivienne and William for the amazing opportunity, thanks to Justine for being my stand-in, and thanks to the Joyce team for their time!

The Wall Street Journal / June 2012 / Scene Asia / SceneStyle / Jason Lam & Elle Lee

I started contributing to The Wall Street Journal’s SceneStyle feature last month! It’s been a lot of fun keeping an eye open while I’m out and about and stopping people for their photo. It helps that I can speak Cantonese and I’m not a creepy dude. Last month, photos of Elle and Jason were published! The exciting part is that the best of the photos on the web get printed in WSJ! My friend from L.A. Sean Marc Lee, whose work I’m also a huge fan of, contributes from Taiwan so I’m in very talented company. Huge thanks to Lara, Jessica and Andrew for the opportunity!

You’ll often find me running around town at events trying to catch/creep on people. Last week Jessi e Lau was around to witness it. Thanks for the behind-the-scenes photos, Jessie!

Surface Magazine / Issue 95 / Leon Jakimič of Lasvit

I received an unexpected e-mail from Surface Magazine with a commission to photograph a portrait of Leon Jakimič at the Ritz-Carlton, one of the properties across the world that contain his elaborate light installations. We shot loads of options with almost every installation on the property as well as different simple portrait options. Leon was super charming and easy to photograph! Thank you Jada and James for the opportunity and Meagan for sending me the tears and the magazine.

Really excited about a lookbook I’m shooting today, The Armoury 2 opening, as well as a personal project this weekend! Also returned from a mission trip to the Philippines on Monday so I have a boatload of photos to share from that…truly grateful, thankful and hopeful.

Random Film Friday / Tea at Sam's

A while ago, my neighbor (Kowloon, represent!) Sam invited me, Tania, and Paola over for some high tea with a La Marnière theme. Look at the invitation she designed!

Now…look at the FOOD below!

Isn’t the spread super lovely? I like all the little stripey nautical details. Favorite things that went into my belly include the samishomemade (you like what I did there?) blue velvet cake in those little jars and the jam the Paola made from scratch! Sam and I also made a quick trip to Sham Shui Po earlier that week to look for some materials to DIY bracelets, so those pretty mounds of string below are not edible. We flipped through and oogled at various issues of Kinfolk, dreaming up events of our own ;)

To top off the lovely afternoon, the sun streamed its glorious rays into her home. My gluttonous and photography/light obsessed sides left blissful.

Instagram Monday

Working on a secret project with some super ladies and some super local foodies so went to visit said secret project site (HK Farm / HK Honey). Only to be rained out on the day it was scheduled, so now it’s taking place on July 7. Can’t wait!

Aimee met up with me to assist me on a shoot at the Four Seasons Presidential Suite, who did I shoot? It’s a secret! I can reveal it in September :P Aimee is from Australia and shoots a lot of film, her work is sweet and her and her friend publish their own print mag called Pocketto (flip through it here, their 2nd issue and each thereafter is softcover). We went to TWG for high tea after the shoot. The tea menu blew my mind. Makeshift fisheye using their fancy teapot.

Opening part at Woobar at The W Hong Kong. One of my favorites, Miss Yellow (carrying the new Mata Hari clutch) is their resident DJ’s on Friday nights! Queen Sea Big Shark, what everyone told me was the China equivalent of The Ting Ting’s performed that night. We were never in short supply of champagne with ever handsome DJ Angus Wong around. :)

Photographed someone at the most amazing flat in Sheung Wan…comparable in awesomeness to my old studio in LA (and for such a steal). He’s a product designer and a rock star so he had this stack of lyric books laying on his dining table. I’ve lived in Jordan/Yau Ma Tei for a total of 9 years now and I’ve never been to Mido Cafe. An institution and tourist spot in HK. The interiors are still as they were in the 60’s with great turquoise tiles and stained glass along the stairs. Some spots in HK are overrated but the baked pork chop rice here is legit. Definite comfort food. Yesterday, spent most of my day at Repulse Bay because lots of people at The Vine were getting baptized, pretty emotional seeing people declaring their faith in God.

The most beautiful and most happy I’ve ever seen my best friend. Also the most tears I’ve ever seen her shed. We all made a bet with her that she wouldn’t cry and she lost the bet as soon as their eyes met for the first time that day. Every time she cried, all the other bridesmaids cried…she said she heard someone weeping dramatically during her vows, it wasn’t me, I swear. The day was filled with so much love and joy for them from all of their family and friends. I’m glad I had a chance to capture some moments on film with my Pentax K1000 in between bridesmaids duties. Congrats Mr. & Mrs. Tin!

Kurt Marcus on Portraits

There’s a bit of dance going on here: who will lead? I don’t know the person I’m about to photograph, and he, or she, doesn’t know me. Maybe it’s an assignment and I’ve got a short time with that person and things need to unfold quickly. I might be asked, “What do you want me to do?” I might reply, “What would you like to do?” This response may not be comforting. I’d guess most people would prefer to simply submit to the process, “I’m in your hands now, I sure hope you know what you’re doing.”

But I don’t want to be in control (with notable exceptions). I have a different agenda. I want to be surprised, I want to be taken on a ride with the person before me, I want to accept, totally, who they are and I want something of that juice to be evident in the picture. The moment I take over is the moment I lose interest because all I am going to see in the resulting portrait is my hand, and I don’t want to see my hand.

Can I erase myself from the process, become invisible? Not always. More truthfully, not much. But I don’t come armed with a signature lighting system, or lens, or even a concept. I’ve tried to coax a few celebrities into clothes they didn’t want to wear or situations they didn’t want to be in, and not only did I fail to convince them they should trust me, I felt stupid. Which is the last thing you want to feel when you’ve got a camera in your hands. Engaged, yes. Curious, yes? Charmed, yes? Stupid? No.

Over the years I’ve come to believe that if I just put myself out there, and, in a manner of speaking, “fall in love” with the person I’m photographing, something good will happen. I want the person to like the picture I’ve done, but I also want them to see themselves in it: their flaws as well as their individual strengths. Acceptance of who they are.

SO GOOD. If I could, I’d give Kurt a fist bump right now.

Hey! It’s my first instagram Monday! Looking back at some of the places I’ve trekked to, shot, and filtered (Valencia is my favorite, hollaaaa!) in the last two weeks.

I celebrated Dan’s birthday awn a boat, hunted down street style at the Electric Sekki. press day & in Tsim Sha Tsui, took a walk along the harbor for a reportage assignment…

went to Tai Po Industrial District early in the morning to shoot video for a friend’s art piece/social experiment involving launching hundreds of paper airplanes off a rooftop during people’s morning commute…

spent lots of time staring at the sky from Sky City Church (75th floor!) and from my rooftop…

had a friend visiting HK so played tour guide; we went to the horse races in Happy Valley, hiking in Tai Tam whilst telling ghost stories and ending the hike at this amazeballs waterfall, and watched the sunset at The Peak (while eating tomato flavor seasoned shake shake fries). Romantical eh?

My Place Magazine / Issue 03 / My HK feat. Daniel Wu

Visited Daniel Wu’s office to photograph him for the My HK feature where he talks about a few of his favorite places in Hong Kong. One of them is a movie theater that shows a lot of indie/art house films attached to a coffee shop/indie bookstore called Kubrick. It’s a mere 10 minute walk from my apartment so it’s quickly become one of my frequented places too!

Edge of Ember

I had the privilege of photographing Edge of Ember’s lookbook for the premier collection; SARAT, which means “beauty” in Khmer. I was excited to work with Lynette because the accessories are handmade by local artisans in Cambodia, Nepal, Indonesia and Vietnam providing self-sustainable employment to those communities.

Lane Crawford launched an American Apparel pop-up at Queensway and part of visual merchandising included video displays featuring slideshows of stylish Hong Kongers wearing AA their way. Geneva of A Pair & A Spare was one of them!

Cindiddy / Alexander Wang

This is something I never would have thought would happen in a million years. I do believe that if I were in LA, that would be the case, but…I’m in HK! and CRAZY things happen in Hong Kong. So thanks to Cindiddy and Prestige Magazine I was able to meet and photograph Alexander Wang! The portrait of him for Prestige hasn’t been published yet so I can only tide you over with these behind-the-scenes from Cindy’s interview with him. :P

Another one…never in a million years! Isabel Marant opened another store in Hong Kong on Ice House Street in Central and she was in town to celebrate! She is undoubtedly one of the coolest women on the face of this earth. Thanks Denise for inviting me!

This is one of the favorite things I’ve shot recently. Reason 1) I got a chance to work with my good friend/BB/Brew&Post Fam Christing. 2) I photographed Emily, who was SO easy to work with and I had photographed her before, for the Colonial Goods x G.O.D. campaign. 3) Perfect weather (okay weather is never perfect in Hong Kong, but it was sunny, we almost died walking back to civilization). I saw this lady hobbling down the MTR stairs , back extremely curved, dragging this Almond Roca can (with a caster attached to the bottom) beside her. I passed her and realized she was carrying an SLR with a zoom lens (larger than any lens i own) around her neck. The AR can was something she had mcgyvered as a dolly for her heavy duty tripod. I said hello and learned that she is self taught and likes shooting landscapes. She was on her way to the Peak to photograph the sunset. She said that the photos she took earlier were “over” and didn’t know how to adjust “EV”. She was shy but eager to learn how to do it so I showed her at admiralty and she went on her way. I wonder if I’ll still be shooting at her age…. I hope I see her again. (Taken with instagram)

my friends are so great at updating their blogs that I feel like i’m a total slacker that’s going to be put in detention soon.

it’s not a matter of having nothing to blog about… since I am alive, and I’ve been taking photos (work and instagram - the only indication that I’m still breathing).
